Class 2

In this class we will discuss:

  • Hardware fundamentals for the software engineer.
  • Z8 Processor, Family and IDE
  • Z8 Oscillator and Electrical Specification

Read:

  • Read the first chapter of the ZDS II manual
  • Read Simon Chapters 3 and 4
  • Read the Z8 databook chapters on “Reset and Stop Mode Recovery”, “Low Power Modes”, “Geberal Purpose I/O” and “Interrupt Controller”

Homework:

I will be giving you things to do with the Z8 kit for homework. You do not need to turn anything in and I will not be grading what you do. But the homework will prepare you for the labs. If you don’t keep up with the reading and the homeworks then the labs will be very difficult.

Lab:

  • Install the IDE if you have not done so already. You DO NOT want to use the IDE that comes on the CD with the kit, its way too old. You need to get the newest (“ZDS II – Z8 Encore! 4.10.1”) from Zilog ( http://www.zilog.com/software/zds2.asp ). Save the executable and install it. Get the Documentation also.
  • Get familiar with the IDE.
  • Try out examples that come with it.
  • Try out some more of the examples that come with the IDE. You will need to compile and download them to the processor.
  • Bring your problems and questions to class.
